A'Vanti
Cerastean
A'Vanti is a Cerastean female and former architect from the city of Najara on planet Ceraste. Tall and willowy with golden scales that shimmer in shades of gold and amber, she has high, angular cheekbones, slitted amber eyes, and long golden hair that falls past her shoulders like spun metal. Her appearance is sharp, elegant, and distinctly serpentine — beautiful and dangerous in equal measure.
Before Queen Diamalla's genocide scattered and enslaved her people, A'Vanti was a gifted architect deeply connected to Cerastean traditions, culture, and history. She was captured by the Ostium and imprisoned in a research facility, where scientists removed her fangs and venom sacs and subjected her to months of experimentation. By the time a joint Cerastean-human strike team rescued her, she had nearly given up the will to live — but never lost her fire. Even at her weakest, she threw herself between an armed soldier and the Ostium scientist who had protected her, refusing to let harm come to the one person who had shown her kindness.
Fiercely proud, formal, and guarded, A'Vanti carries herself with a regal bearing that reflects her deep roots in Cerastean culture. Unlike the Cerastean males readers have met in previous books — who spent time with humans and adapted to human customs — A'Vanti's identity has not been softened by time among humans. Her formality, her traditions, and her connection to her homeworld are entirely intact, giving readers their first true window into what Cerastean culture looks like on its own terms.
As she recovers from her captivity aboard the mothership, A'Vanti slowly opens up through therapy with Dr. Singh and through the quiet, persistent kindness of a human fighter pilot named Cody Johnson — who she absolutely refuses to call "Goober" because heroes deserve better. Their journey takes them from the mothership all the way to Ceraste itself, where A'Vanti begins the work of rebuilding her world and, in the process, learns to hope again.
